My daughter, Rory, has a Mitochondrial Disorder that she has suffered from her entire life. When she was young (2-8 years old), she would periodically have to deal with Alopecia Areata, where she would have dime-size to silver-dollar-size areas with no hair. Her hair would just come out in clumps for no apparent reason. This made for a challenge in trying to hide these spots and keeping her hair looking nice.
When Rory was in 1st Grade, her school did an event for Locks of Love. What an amazing organization. They provide wigs for children with medical issues such as what Rory had, cancer, and more. My sister, niece, and I all cut our hair (a minimum of 10 inches) for donation. Rory could not do it but made it a personal goal to someday donate to Locks of Love.
I have no answer to why Rory no longer suffers from this affliction, but the girl has a head of hair now that you would not believe… long, thick, gorgeous, healthy! A couple of years ago, Rory’s hair was long enough and healthy enough to reach her goal.

Then, mom went to town chopping and hacking off Rory’s pony-tailed hair and trying to make a nice style for her. Here is the result…

Update:
Since this post was originally written, Rory has again cut and donated her hair to Locks of Love. She got together with a friend to support this amazing project. Why not host your own cut-a-thon? It is easy to donate to Locks of Love.

Thanks, Ashley. It really was a personal triumph for her. Her brother’s college roommate told her that her haired looked “sexy”…for a sophomore in high school, she was over the moon! LOL
Bless Rory and you for this wonderful gift some deserving child. Her hair is positively gorgeous and she should be so proud. You should also be proud of the fine parenting you’ve done!
Rory is definitely a challenge at times, but she is such an inspiration and a joy. I am proud of her. 🙂

After I got rid of my troublesome locks it felt like I weighed twenty pounds less!!! For it being the first time I had ever really cut my hair compared to trimming it, it was surely fun to do!! I have been contemplating growing out my hair again, even though I would have to deal with the terrible snarls and knots in my hair, just so that I could donate once again!! It certainly was a life goal well achieved!!!

Wow! Her hair is gorgeous! I can’t believe you cut it yourself! I’d be too freaked out to take scissors to anyone’s hair! One time I tried to pluck my husband’s eyebrows and even messed that up! Your family did a wonderful thing by donating hair. Great post!
Ha! I have to admit I was a little on the nervous side about cutting her hair, but it was either me or nobody…so I close my eyes and went for it! Well, not really, I did keep my eyes open. Glad you enjoyed the post. 🙂
That is such a wonderful story. In this day a lot of children unfortunately don’t care to help. I am so glad that your daughter was able to hang on to her dream to help this wonderful cause and followed through. BTW great job on the hair Mom it looks great!
