The Litter Master Recommends
Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze
Â
Â
They call me, The Litter Master.
…
Cats are known for having unique and quirky personalities, and honestly, my adopted family finds me a little on the wacky side. But, they cannot argue with my superb selection in litter, Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze.
Some may say I am obsessed with litter. Just because I monitor the litter box, investigate when anyone is nearby, and have to jump in and check things out when people are messing with my box, does not mean I am obsessed. Can I help it if they don’t rake the new litter like I want it, and I have to climb in and rearrange the granules to perfect feline specifications? I take my litter seriously, don’t you? Do you like to use a dirty, smelly bathroom? Of course, not. So, go ahead, call me obsessed, call me The Litter Master; after all, I have a doctorate in litterology.
Â
Â
When our family adopted Josie and me as cuddly little kittens, we had a regular plastic litter box with no lid. Josie was so tiny she had trouble climbing into the box, but she did manage. I, on the other hand, thought that box was a great place to play. The litter box was my personal sand box—especially if it was freshly cleaned and filled with new litter. Such fun I had doing flips and somersaults, scratching and throwing about the litter. I was in heaven playing in my sand box. But, all that my family saw was the so-called mess. Was it really a problem to have litter strewn everywhere?
That constant mess led to the purchase of a deeper litter box with a lid! I was told my shenanigans had to be contained. The new higher-sided box meant the revival of Rory’s childhood step to reach the sink. Josie needed a boost to get in and out of the new litter box. LOL I have to admit, watching her try to get in or out before we gave her the step was hilarious, take it from a brother. Josie was a trooper, and she was determined to use the litter box and not go anywhere else.
…
Kitty life went along just fine, until one day when we had a litter change…
…
My family had me neutered! Think of all the litterology prodigies I could have spawned. Now, I must focus on sharing my expertise with humans to help better the lives of my fellow felines. But, I digress, when I returned home to recover (and believe you me, I worked the sympathy ploy to be royally pampered), the veterinarian recommend we use shredded paper instead of litter for the 10 days of my recovery. My precious Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze! Did he realize what he was asking? BIG MISTAKE! Neither Josie nor I was happy, and it led to this…
Â
Â
Skeptics may say this was a diabolical plan to get our favorite litter back, but Josie and I are tight—we will never admit to it. So, mission accomplished… I mean, mom and dad decided to give us back our litter, and just take extra care of me, when I had to use the facilities. The next problem at paw was how to clean the couch! Well, the doctor is in; let me help.
…

What is the Best Way to Get Cat Urine Out of Your Couch?
Well, let’s learn a little science, so we can best understand the issue. Cat urine is waste fluid of protein metabolism. Its color and staining potential may vary with dietary habits, age, health, and sex of the cat. Since cat diets are typically richer in protein than that of dogs, cat urine can cause harsher odors, and are more likely to stain. See, cats have good reason for being finicky.
But, there is some good news. You can get the smell out of your couch. It is all in the science. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), will damage the protein and lipids in the cat urine that lead to bacteria and odors. (There goes the vet’s plan to boost sales at the family sofa factory).
Keep in mind that cat urine can easily penetrate and saturate absorbent materials such as, carpet, upholstery, padding, etc. In fact, Josie’s accident soaked all the way through the couch and onto the flooring. The sooner you find and take care of the accident the better–while it is still wet is best.
Â
Here’s a Recipe for Cleaning Cat Urine:
NOTES:
- DO NOT mix this until you are ready to apply it. Hydrogen Peroxide stays active for only 15 minutes.
- DO TRY this on a small, inconspicuous area to be sure it is color safe on your upholstery, carpet, etc.
- USE gloves to protect your hands.
- 16 0z – 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (if using 6% H2O2, dilute 50/50 with water)
- 1 Teaspoon mild Dishwashing Liquid
- 1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
How to Clean and Apply:
- Remove as much stuffing or padding, upholstery coverings, etc., as you can.
- Completely Soak the saturated areas (plus a little more for good measure) with cold water.
- Use clean white cloths or paper toweling to pat dry the area. Use deep pressure to draw as much of the urine out as possible. Do not rub or scrub.
- If your padding is removable, soak with water and squeeze it out good.
- When you have removed as much cat urine as you can, Mix the cleaning solution (H2O2, liquid soap, baking soda).
- Wearing gloves, immediately saturate the areas with the solution. Use a white clean cloth to help you squeeze the cleaner into hard-to-reach places. (Place your padding in a large sink or tub, and soak thoroughly).
- Once everything is fully soaked through, allow the cleaning solution to stand for a minimum of 15 minutes before sopping up as much liquid as you can.
- Let air dry completely. This may take a while, maybe even a day or two–do not rush the drying.
- Then, vacuum.
This works great! It has been nearly two months since our little accident, and we have had no recurrence of odor, and no staining.

So, why does The Litter Master recommend Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze?
Â
Â
For one thing, Red Fox and Mr. Mouse give the new 42lb. bag, found only at Sam’s Club, a thumbs up! Jinx, The Litter Master, is a huge fan of the antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of odor producing bacteria, and the Borate Technology for superior ammonia control. Josie loves the odor controlling power of Febreze with the fresher aroma of the lemongrass citrus scent and lower dust.

Mom and dad like the resealable bag and stretchy handle that make handling and storing so much easier. PLUS, be sure to check the May Instant Savings Book – $3.50 off at Sam’s Club 5/11-6/5. Love the shame on Josie pictures. This is a really cool post. And your kittens are too cute.
Yeah, Josie has quite a perturbed glare! LOL She was as unhappy as we were. So glad this cleaner works like a charm. 🙂
I have to say, the Litter Master has me laughing out loud for real!! This is such a comical and helpful post! Thanks! #client
So glad I could give you a good laugh and still deliver some really great information. I had a lot of fun putting this post together. 🙂
I love that this post is so full of kitty goodness! And HOW on EARTH did you ever get Jinx to wear that hat?! CoCo would NEVER!!!
Hahaha! Yes, that hat… it was tricky. He kept wanting to chase the tassle. 🙂 I took close to 200 shots to capture a few workable photos. But, we had a really fun time putting the post together. I am sure CoCo would love a yarn ball or two. 🙂
Jinx and Josie are so adorable.. Fresh Step has been our (our cat’s choice, I mean) for many years. That hat!!! My favorite photo is Josie with the shame note! We had to endure the newspaper episodes too so I know how that is. Great recipe!
We certainly think Jinx and Josie are the cutest things ever! I used Fresh Step Litter (gosh, it must have been 30 years ago now – yikes!), with my first cat, and we still love the product today. And, Shirley, if you have tried this fantastic! We had a ton of fun creating this post, hat, yarn balls, and all…the shaming not so much fun, but it worked out in the end… LOL …great glare from Josie!
I can’t stop laughing! Congrats to Jinx on the doctorate degree. 🙂 And that hat. I don’t have cats anymore, but love watching your cats grow up. This entire post is adorable!!
Yep, he’s a cat with smarticles! Glad you like the hat too, we had fun. 🙂 I enjoy sharing my kitties, so happy we could entertain and give you a good laugh.
Very funny!
I so miss having kitties!! Yours is adorable, what a great model!! #HomeMattersParty
Jinx and Josie were super good for their photo shoots! LOL It only took about 200 pics to capture a few good ones. 🙂

Great advice. Lovely post with funny pictures. I think my cats would go mad for those DIY toys too – will have to give them a go 🙂
Oh, let me know how your cats like their yarn balls, Gill. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the post!
I loved reading this post! Your cats are so cute, your story was funny, informative, and well written, and I love that you included a recipe to clean cat urine. I also think the yarn balls are fantastic! My daughter loves cats, and would love to make these yarn balls for some kitties at our local shelter. Thank you for sharing! #HomeMattersParty
What an awesome idea to make the yarn balls for donating to shelters! So glad you enjoyed the post Kim, we had a really fun time putting it together. 🙂
You have such a cute cat. I remember how my cousins had a cat growing up and I used to love playing with their kitty. And I love the diy cat toy you made- it looks like a lot of fun!
We certainly think Jinx and Josie are adorable! Cats are a lot of fun. 🙂
too funny! peeing on the couch, that would suck, but it did amuse me, sorry to say… I don’t have a cat, but my brother and his wife do, I’ll be sure to share this with them!
Thanks for sharing this post, Eloise! 🙂 We had to laugh at Josie as well…after the frustration. Thanks goodness that cleaning solution really does work.
Okay, I love that you got your cat to wear a graduation cap! That’s so cute, and my cats would NOT have done that. My cats are very finicky about their litter too. Switching it up to shredded paper after spays or neuters just didn’t work for them! They were not happy kitties.
Doesn’t Jinx look adorable in his graduation cap?! LOL He was such a good sport. I love the finicky and quirky personalities of cats. 🙂
Oh how I love this post! As the mom of six cats, I know exactly how Josie felt when brother needed shredded newspaper…my boys hated that whole deal. Thanks for sharing a great post with wonderful ideas for my kitties! #HomeMattersParty
The cat is adorable and since I use Febreeze regularly I can be confident that having litter with febreeze freshness is the way to go.
It is amazing the difference having Febreze in the litter makes! Thanks for finding Jinx and Josie so cute. 🙂
Lol! My cat would never wear that hat…even for a second!
Jinx was a good sport! He did enjoy playing with the tassel. LOL
As a multiple cat owner myself, I know the annoyance of cat urine where it shouldn’t be! It is such a pain to get rid of the smell. I will definitely be keeping this recipe for future use!
Lisa, you will be so happy with the results of this cleaning solution. It WORKS great! 🙂 This accident is our one and only since we adopted our kitties in September…feeling pretty lucky. Glad you enjoyed the post.
Fresh step is great! also, so is this toy. I have 3 cats I need to make some toys for. I Love DIY toys for my fur babies. So much fun.
Yes, Fresh Step is a great kitty litter, and the Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze is their most amazing product yet! Definitely give it a try. Do make the yarn balls for your cats, and be sure to let us know how much they love them. 🙂
What a cute DIY cat toy!! I never would have known how to get cat urine out of a couch like that!
Jinx and Josie absolutely love these yarn ball cat toys! And the cat urine cleaning solution is amazing and super easy–works great! 🙂
This post is too cute! The pictures, oh my goodness!! What a great tip for cleaning up!
So glad you enjoy the post and the adorable kitty pictures! Give this cleaning solution a try if you have the need…it works great! 🙂
Cat urine is the worst. I had a cat go on my couch. Even after steam cleaning it, sometimes, I think I still smell it. I hope I can replace my old couches soon. I need to tell my sister about this litter. I no longer have cats. Instead, I have three very spoiled dogs.
I love the pictures of your cats and wish mine would pose so nice for pictures. I love the yarn ball toy tutorial and wish I had that urine spray cleaner when we moved and my cats were still adjusting.
Kittens have always been so cute and funny to me. I love the humor in this post and yes to fresh step.
This is so cute! Cats have such a mind of their own and every one is so unique. Great post!
This is such an adorable post. Thanks for sharing this DIY cat toy idea.
This is a very cute post and I love your cat. I’ve heard great things about Fresh Step
I love your DIY cat toy made out of yarn! I kinda wish I had a cat now, I have so much yarn lying around!
The yarn ball cat toys are fun. Make them to donate to an cat shelter in your area, they will love them! And, it would be a great project to get kids involved in too. 🙂
So nice to see Jinx with his doctorate degree. Cute! Lots of great tips and ideas for Cat lovers.
Such a creative post! Love the litter master! #HomeMattersParty
I am cracking up laughing at this graduation cap. That is the funniest thing I’ve seen all day.
my husband would get all mad every time he changed the litter cuz the cat jumps in and goes to the bathroom . I’d tell him she’s just marking the territory.
Lol loved it but I do not need a litter tray. Thanks for sharing on #overthemoon
Oh my goodness, that picture of your cat with the degree is just adorable! I love the handmade pom poms too, my cat would have loved them when she was younger, she’s 19 next month!
