15 Tips & Tricks - Organize Your Home - Life With Lorelai | Life With Lorelai

You may have read on my blog before, here and here that I am still trying to recover from an upstairs bathroom flood, which caused a waterfall in my living room for over 5 1/2 hours, just 5-days before Christmas last year. On top of this monumental disaster, I am trying to de-clutter and re-organize my home. I live in the house I grew up in with my daughter Rory. So, after 42-years and 4-generations, there is LOTS of work to be done around here.

Pinterest is an amazing source for organizational tips and tricks. I am gathering quite a collection of Pins on my Pinterest Board. I thought I would share a few of those Pins with you, and I hope you will SHARE This Post with others too!

Here is a fantastic way to control the flip flop clutter and abolish the flip flop black hole that steals away just the flip without the flop. And bonus, you get to re-purpose those awful wire hangers you get from the dry cleaners! Make a set for a friend for Christmas.

The Side Yard Project Begins…

Last year Luke and I laid paving stones in his side yard. We did the half from the backyard. this year we are laying the stones in the rest of the side yard leading to the front yard. We finally got rid of the huge pile of clean fill dirt, thanks to Craigslist, and are able to get started with the project. Here is a picture of the stone walk we laid last year. You can see the area at the end of the walkway where we are working now.

Luke got the trench dug for a cement curbing along the house. The foundation is really rough and certainly not straight, so we thought pouring a little cement to give us a straight line would be the best bet.

And here’s Luke, my he-man, after he finished digging the trench. Hahaha!

Well, folks…this was just a little piece of what we did over the weekend. Hope you had a wonderful weekend too.

Bathroom Bliss – A Few Cleaning Tips

Bathroom Bliss? This looks more like a Disaster!

This is our newly remodeled upstairs bathroom. The Christmas flood was good for something at least. Obviously it is not finished just yet since it has no mirror, but that will come later. We love our new bathroom, and to help keep it sparkling clean and in tip-top shape, we have a few easy cleaning tips and tricks.

Cleaning Tips

First off, the Products~

Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Scrubbing Bubbles, Chlorox Wipes, Glass Cleaner, Paper Towels, Sponges, Scrub Brush, Latex Gloves, and Plastic Bags.

Then, the Organization~

As you can see, all of the supplies for cleaning fit into our handy plastic tub, except for the paper towels and the plastic bags (the plastic bags are tucked inside the paper towel roll).

Everything tucks into the vanity cabinet (under the sink) for convenient storage. This way everything is handy-dandy when you need a more thorough cleaning. We keep a supply box like this in every bathroom. You can see our Non-Adhesive Contact Paper lining the shelf.

Tip Time~

Now, obviously, we all know what to do with the toilet bowl cleaner, but I keep a small toilet brush tucked back behind the toilet so we can swish and swipe every morning…very quick, very easy. This way we don’t have any really hard scrubbing clean-up when we do our weekly cleaning.

We line the trash can with a plastic bag…recycling, yes! This also helps keep the trash can clean.

Whenever we use the sink, we dry and polish it up with the towel. And every night before bed, we use the glass cleaner and a paper towel to shine up the sink, faucet, and counter top…easy-peasy.

Here’s the shower / tub… oh, how we L.O.V.E. our new shower! Notice the purple arrow pointing to the squeegy? This makes shower clean up so much easier. When we are finished showering, we simply use the squeegy to wipe down the shower doors, and shower walls. We use a towel to shine up all of the chrome fixtures, and our shower always looks gorgeous.

These are just a few simple tips that really do not add a lot of time to your daily routine, but save a lot when it comes to cleaning your bathroom!

I hope you found these tips useful. Do you have any cleaning tips? I would love to here about them in the comments!

Meet Tin Man…

Tin Man – A Rose Bush in Luke’s Garden

Luke grows the most beautiful roses in his yard. While working in the flower bed yesterday, we noticed this heart in the plant, and affectionately named the bush, Tin Man. Look, you can even see the break in Tin Man’s heart from when Dorothy left Oz.

Several of Luke’s rose bushes have names, it’s kind of a quirky thing we do, but at least we easily know which bush we are talking about. Luke’s friend Rick (his real name is Ricky Joe) fell into one of the bushes near Luke’s front door one drunken St. Patrick’s Day night, and that started the whole thing… There are four bushes (two on each side of Luke’s front door) which are named Fred, Ethel, Lucy, and Ricky Joe…you guessed it, I Love Lucy! Then there was Lonesome George, a bush on the far side of the garage all by himself (the neighbor has now planted a peach tree nearby, which George seems to be flirting with), and a bush that Luke threatened to yank out of the ground because he wasn’t doing well…he called him Weak Wendell. Wendell listened to the threat and is now thriving and no longer weak.

Well, it’s fertilizing day…back off to the garden I go…

Lorelai Gets Lucky With Locky Luke and Bert!

Lorelai, Luke, and Bert the Toolbox – Gilmore Girls

I am one blessed girl to have Luke in my life. He always says, “If the girls can’t find you handsome, let them find you handy!” Lucky me, Luke is both.

Luke came over this weekend with Bert the Toolbox, and changed all of the locks at my house–4 locking doorknobs and 3 deadbolts. Thank goodness this is finally done. This is a project I have been waiting for since the end of March.

March is when all of the contractors finished up in my house, and the lock-box on the front door (so the workers could get in and out) was taken off. March 31st was the day Christopher was supposed to move out. So, now the workers and Christopher are gone, and I have shiny new locks on my doors thanks to Luke and Bert.

It’s such a great feeling!

Do you have any home projects that you have been waiting to get accomplished? I have a whole slue of others since we are still recovering from the Christmas flood, but one day at a time.

We’re FLYing!

“You can do anything for 15-minutes!”

Well, with Christopher moved out, and Kirk living and working on campus this summer, it is time for Rory and I to get this house CLEAN!!! I am so excited to be able to clean and not find more mess in mere minutes.

Five days before Christmas last year, we had a major flood in our house. The upstairs bathroom had 4-inches of water standing in it, water seeped into the bedroom, a closet, and the linen closet, and worst of all… We had a waterfall in our living room! Five and a half hours after we turned off the main water to the house, we still had water pouring from our living room ceiling. The Christmas Tree did not look happy and neither did I.

Finally, all of the reconstruction is finished, but my house is not yet put back together. To help us get the house into tip top shape, Rory and I are FLYing with the FlyLady! If you need to get organized, motivated, or energized to clean and de-clutter your house, check it out.

So far, so good for Rory and me. Do you FLY or have any great tips?
