Bringing Home A Cat
Tips to Make Kitty Feel Welcome
Adopting a cuddly and fluffy kitten or an adult cat can bring joy and companionship to your family. But just like bringing home a baby, you need to be prepared. I have some great tips for helping your kitty adjust to its new home, and help you keep him happy and safe. And, learn how to help save millions of homeless cats one jug of litter at a time!
Essentials
Carrier or Crate
Be sure to take a carrier or crate with your when you go to pick-up your cat. Place a soft and cozy blanket inside for kitty to snuggle into. Not only will it provide a sense of security, it is also the best and safest way for your cat to travel in a car.
Appropriate Food
It is important to feed your cat a healthy and nutritious diet that is appropriate for its age. Kittens have different nutritional needs than fully grown cats or older mature cats. Be sure to ask your veterinarian for a recommendation if you have questions.
Litter Box and Litter
Have a litter box ready to go for your new feline friend. They will thank you. Cat’s like to use a litter box. If you are bringing home a very young kitten, good news, litter training will be easy! Kittens that are 10 to 12 weeks old may come to their new home already trained. If you buy Cat’s Pride® Fresh and Light® litter in the GREEN JUG, one pound of litter will be donated to a shelter for those kitties less fortunate than yours.
Other Necessities
Some other items you will want to have for your cat or kitten are a Scratching Post, Food and Water Dishes, Grooming Tools, Collar and Tag, Safe Toys, a Bed.
Visit the Veterinarian
Take your cat or kitten to see the veterinarian within the first week of bringing home a cat. At that visit, your kitty will get a wellness check, any shots or tests they may need, and you can have them microchipped as well.
Kittens are sometimes adopted as early as six weeks old. This is a little early and can be hard on the kitten. Ten to twelve weeks old makes for a much easier transition. Kittens may be lonely – missing their mom and siblings. The will also be confused and maybe scared. Soothe your kitten by holding it gently, keeping it warm, providing pets, and playing with it. Take cues from your cat as to what it may want or need, or how much to provide.
Adopt Two Cats
Bring two kitties home is a win-win for both you and the cats. Your cats won’t be lonely, they’ll have a feline buddy to cuddle and play with. This will not only be easier on you, but it is twice the entertainment watching the cats frolic and play together. Jinx and Josie are brother and sister from the same litter. They are definitely a bonded pair. They love each other so much, take care of each other, snuggle and play — super cute.

Keep Pets Healthy and Your Home Clean
Get helpful tips on protecting your pets
It’s National Pet Month! So, in celebrating our furry friends, I wanted to share some tips on how to keep pets healthy. Part of keeping your pet healthy is maintaining a clean home.
We’ve been pretty lucky with our cats, Jinx and Josie, they don’t spit up furballs or throw up often, but when they do, we can embrace life’s messes with the help of the Libman Wonder Mop®. It has Microfiber GRIPSTRIPS™ that lift up to 20% more dirt and a power wringer to remove more water from the mop head. Best yet (as far as I’m concerned – LOL), you can toss the Wonder Mop mop head into the washing machine! Now, that makes for easy cleanup. The mop head can go through 50 washing cycles before it needs to be replaced. Awesome, right?

Here are some other ways we keep our pets healthy:
Pet Medical Binder
It is important to get your pet regular veterinary care to keep their health at its best — shots, flea/tick treatments, spay/neuter, worming, etc. Pay attention to your pet and if something seems off, don’t hesitate to get it checked out. Keep track of your pet’s health records and microchip registration. Jinx and Josie have a binder with a record of all the shots they have received, the surgeries, antibiotics, and so forth. This way, if you need to change vets, or are on vacation with your pet, you have their history easily accessible.
Wash Food and Water Bowl Daily
Would it be healthy for you to eat off dirty dishes? No, and neither is it for your pet. Make sure to wash food and water bowls daily. Provide fresh food each day, and make sure to refrigerate leftover wet food properly.
Clean Litter Box Daily
Cats are very particular about their litter box. They like it and want it to be clean. This is also something that is super important to your cat’s urinary health. Cats get urinary infections easily, so be sure to scoop out the box one to two times per day — more if you have multiple cats. Completely wash the litter box and provide fresh litter at least once a week.
Brush Fur
Brushing your pet’s coat helps them get rid of excess fur. Not only does that help keep your home cleaner, it helps keep your pet from swallowing fur as they lick themselves. Cats are especially susceptible to furballs.
Play with your Pet
Play with your pet. Not only is it great bonding time and lots of fun, but it also provides exercise to keep your pet trim and healthy.

We know that cleaning out the litter box and changing the litter is not on the top of your favorite things to do list, but what if you could be Changing Litter for Good®?

We know that keeping your cat happy and healthy is something you take very seriously, and we thank you. But think about all those sweet little kitties living in shelters and dreaming of a forever home. Help them by helping the shelters that take care of them.
We want every kitty to be as happy as we are. One of the things we look forward to every morning is waking mom up (sometimes she thinks it’s too early just because it’s still dark) to take us outside. We love to explore our backyard, smell the pretty flowers, and watch and talk to the birds. Yes, Jinx is something of a cat Dr. Doolittle. He loves his hummingbird friends.
Of course, being cats, we love to snuggle, sleep, and play too.
Well, we hope we have inspired you to sign up for the free Cat’s Pride® Club to nominate a shelter to receive litter donations. Over 4 million pounds of litter have been donated since 1995, and nearly 400,000 pounds have been donated this year already. You can find updates on the program donations and shelter highlights on the website too.
You can purchase your own green jugs of Cat’s Pride Fresh & Light litter at a local store near you. We grabbed ours at Walmart. The Cat’s Pride Club offers valuable coupons and incentives throughout the year, so don’t miss out.

You can pamper cats, pamper dogs, or pamper them both! Grocery Outlet has a variety of name brand pet foods and treats such as Natural Balance; Nature’s Recipe; Meow Mix; 9 Lives; Beneful; Pedigree; Greenies; Milo’s Kitchen; Dingo; Waggin Trail; Purina and more.

I picked up a Cat Self Groom’r that Jinx absolutely adores. It’s a 3 in 1 groomer, massager, and scratcher that even comes with a small packet of catnip. He likes rubbing the bristle arch and scratching at the carpeted base.
Josie has an addiction to all things fleece. She has a couple of fleece beds and a huge cuddly fleece blanket. So, when I saw the Cat Scratch and Rest soft fleece with sisal scratcher, I knew that was the purchase for her. It is so cute, shaped like a fish and has a crinkle tail. Josie and Jinx love to attack the fish eye — LOL. Josie suckles into the fleece and kneads away with the loudest purrs ever.
Another item I picked up at the Pet-Tacular Event was the Pet Spa Glove. This glove makes it super easy to pet your cat or dog while giving them a massage and removing loose fur from their coat. Jinx and Josie love to be petted or brushed with the spa glove.

We love our cats, Jinx and Josie. They are definitely precious and we don’t want them to get hurt in any way. Dogs and cats have special needs. So, it is important to be aware that not everything that is good for you is good for your pet. Take chocolate, for instance, I love a yummy chocolate fix once in a while (ok, maybe a little more often than that), but chocolate can be deadly to dogs and cats.

Keep Your Vehicle Clean from Everyday Life Messes
Life is full of potential messes. Grocery shopping, beach trips, sports gear, gardening, kids, and pets can all take a toll on your vehicle. Well, I have a solution for you — the INNX SUV Cargo Liner Cover.
This quality product comes with a lifetime guarantee. It is waterproof, easy to install and maintain. Simply wipe up spills with a damp cloth or sponge. The cargo liner cover is machine washable on a gentle cycle in cold water, and let it air dry.
Installation is a snap with adjustable straps and velcro. The straps hook around the headrests on the back seat. We found that with our Suburban, we needed to snap the straps around the headrest and the outer part of the seat next to the headrest since the area is so wide. The cargo liner fits nicely.
The INNX SUV waterproof cargo liner cover is easy to order on Amazon — you can find it here.
Our precious and adorable kitties, Jinx and Josie, recently turned one-year-old! It was definitely a time to celebrate — kitty cat style with Kitty Cakes.
Celebrate in Kitty Style With Kitty Cakes!
Now obviously, you can’t serve up cake and ice cream for your cat. But here is a pet and vet approved way to offer up something festive for the special day.
Our cats eat dry cat food on a regular basis, so any time they get a little wet food, it’s a treat. We save these times for after a vet visit, a bath, or some other thing they have to do, but don’t particularly enjoy.
These Kitty Cakes are really very simple. Just use a can of wet cat food (paté style) and some dry cat food pieces.
I turned the canned paté over onto a plate (instead of their usual food dish). Then, I added bits of the dry cat food around the edge to decorate. Since you can’t have a birthday candle, I piled some of the dry food in the center of the “cake” for added decoration.

Jinx and Josie LOVED their Kitty Cakes! Jinx, being the monster huge cat that he is, ate almost all of his kitty cake in one sitting, but sweet little Josie girl nibbled at hers for several days. We just placed the leftovers (including plate) into a zippered plastic bag and stuck it in the refrigerator.
Josie – I savored every morsel. It was such a tasty treat.
Jinx – Do birthdays only come around once a year? Really???
We just know your cat is going to love Kitty Cakes!

The Litter Master Recommends
Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze
They call me, The Litter Master.
…
Cats are known for having unique and quirky personalities, and honestly, my adopted family finds me a little on the wacky side. But, they cannot argue with my superb selection in litter, Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze.
Some may say I am obsessed with litter. Just because I monitor the litter box, investigate when anyone is nearby, and have to jump in and check things out when people are messing with my box, does not mean I am obsessed. Can I help it if they don’t rake the new litter like I want it, and I have to climb in and rearrange the granules to perfect feline specifications? I take my litter seriously, don’t you? Do you like to use a dirty, smelly bathroom? Of course, not. So, go ahead, call me obsessed, call me The Litter Master; after all, I have a doctorate in litterology.
When our family adopted Josie and me as cuddly little kittens, we had a regular plastic litter box with no lid. Josie was so tiny she had trouble climbing into the box, but she did manage. I, on the other hand, thought that box was a great place to play. The litter box was my personal sand box—especially if it was freshly cleaned and filled with new litter. Such fun I had doing flips and somersaults, scratching and throwing about the litter. I was in heaven playing in my sand box. But, all that my family saw was the so-called mess. Was it really a problem to have litter strewn everywhere?
That constant mess led to the purchase of a deeper litter box with a lid! I was told my shenanigans had to be contained. The new higher-sided box meant the revival of Rory’s childhood step to reach the sink. Josie needed a boost to get in and out of the new litter box. LOL I have to admit, watching her try to get in or out before we gave her the step was hilarious, take it from a brother. Josie was a trooper, and she was determined to use the litter box and not go anywhere else.
…
Kitty life went along just fine, until one day when we had a litter change…
…
My family had me neutered! Think of all the litterology prodigies I could have spawned. Now, I must focus on sharing my expertise with humans to help better the lives of my fellow felines. But, I digress, when I returned home to recover (and believe you me, I worked the sympathy ploy to be royally pampered), the veterinarian recommend we use shredded paper instead of litter for the 10 days of my recovery. My precious Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze! Did he realize what he was asking? BIG MISTAKE! Neither Josie nor I was happy, and it led to this…
Skeptics may say this was a diabolical plan to get our favorite litter back, but Josie and I are tight—we will never admit to it. So, mission accomplished… I mean, mom and dad decided to give us back our litter, and just take extra care of me, when I had to use the facilities. The next problem at paw was how to clean the couch! Well, the doctor is in; let me help.
…
What is the Best Way to Get Cat Urine Out of Your Couch?
Well, let’s learn a little science, so we can best understand the issue. Cat urine is waste fluid of protein metabolism. Its color and staining potential may vary with dietary habits, age, health, and sex of the cat. Since cat diets are typically richer in protein than that of dogs, cat urine can cause harsher odors, and are more likely to stain. See, cats have good reason for being finicky.
But, there is some good news. You can get the smell out of your couch. It is all in the science. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2), will damage the protein and lipids in the cat urine that lead to bacteria and odors. (There goes the vet’s plan to boost sales at the family sofa factory).
Keep in mind that cat urine can easily penetrate and saturate absorbent materials such as, carpet, upholstery, padding, etc. In fact, Josie’s accident soaked all the way through the couch and onto the flooring. The sooner you find and take care of the accident the better–while it is still wet is best.
DO NOT mix this until you are ready to apply it. Hydrogen Peroxide stays active for only 15 minutes.
DO TRY this on a small, inconspicuous area to be sure it is color safe on your upholstery, carpet, etc.
USE gloves to protect your hands.
16 0z – 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (if using 6% H2O2, dilute 50/50 with water)
1 Teaspoon mild Dishwashing Liquid
1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
How to Clean and Apply:
Remove as much stuffing or padding, upholstery coverings, etc., as you can.
Completely Soak the saturated areas (plus a little more for good measure) with cold water.
Use clean white cloths or paper toweling to pat dry the area. Use deep pressure to draw as much of the urine out as possible. Do not rub or scrub.
If your padding is removable, soak with water and squeeze it out good.
When you have removed as much cat urine as you can, Mix the cleaning solution (H2O2, liquid soap, baking soda).
Wearing gloves, immediately saturate the areas with the solution. Use a white clean cloth to help you squeeze the cleaner into hard-to-reach places. (Place your padding in a large sink or tub, and soak thoroughly).
Once everything is fully soaked through, allow the cleaning solution to stand for a minimum of 15 minutes before sopping up as much liquid as you can.
Let air dry completely. This may take a while, maybe even a day or two–do not rush the drying.
Then, vacuum.
This works great! It has been nearly two months since our little accident, and we have had no recurrence of odor, and no staining.

So, why does The Litter Master recommend Fresh Step Total Control with the Power of Febreze?
For one thing, Red Fox and Mr. Mouse give the new 42lb. bag, found only at Sam’s Club, a thumbs up! Jinx, The Litter Master, is a huge fan of the antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of odor producing bacteria, and the Borate Technology for superior ammonia control. Josie loves the odor controlling power of Febreze with the fresher aroma of the lemongrass citrus scent and lower dust.
Mom and dad like the resealable bag and stretchy handle that make handling and storing so much easier. PLUS, be sure to check the May Instant Savings Book – $3.50 off at Sam’s Club 5/11-6/5. Jinx and Josie present Meow Reviews in this post for Purina Pro Plan – Savor® Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula. Bring out the best in your cat!
Purina Pro Plan Is The Cats’ Meows!
Just Ask Jinx & Josie…
Meow’s it going? We’ve hijacked mom’s blog today to speak with you, the owners of our furry cat friends, on behalf of Purina Pro Plan for Cats. Who are we? And, what gives us such authority? Well…
We knew we were in for something special, when mom sat us down on the couch and opened a package that contained this marvelous bag.
Mom was a bit of a tease. She showed us the bag and shook it about–drove us crazy! Then, she made us wait until our regular mealtime to give it a try. Psh, moms…
Finally, mom cut the bag open. We were crawling around her feet and standing up against her legs eager with anticipation. She poured some of the new food into the measuring cup. See for yourself how we reacted.
The time had come. We were about to get our little scratchy tongues wrapped around the savory, aromatic morsels of Purina® Pro Plan Savor® Shredded Blend. The kibbles clinked on our stainless steel dish as mom poured the food in the bowl…
Chicken and Rice — Holy Mouse, Catwoman! This stuff is TASTY!!!
We gobbled it up in a hurry. Mom kept telling us about how good and healthy this dry cat food was for us. You know, things like the high-quality protein, including chicken as the #1 ingredient, and that it is 40% protein. Or, that it has Vitamin A and linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, to keep our skin and coat shiny and healthy, and that the natural prebiotic fiber, sourced from chicory root, helps promote digestive health…blah, blah, blah. Kind of boring to us, but the crunchy kibble and tender, meaty pieces that smelled and tasted so wonderful made for a nutritious and unique mealtime experience for us. Just look at how much we loved it.
So, now it’s time to get the scoop…
Being cats ourselves, we know just how important we are to you. After all, it is clear that you live to please and pamper us on a daily basis. And keeping us healthy, happy, and playful is of major importance. Purina Pro Plan Cat makes it easy to chose the right product for your cat to maintain advanced nutrition with carefully selected quality ingredients for safety and performance to help cats thrive. Dry cat food helps keep our teeth healthy and clean too.
The NEW Shredded Blend comes in two flavors: Chicken & Rice Formula and Salmon & Rice Formula. Depending on the flavor, either chicken or salmon are the #1 ingredients, making this a nutritious cat food.
Where can you purchase the Shredded Blend for your cat?
That’s easy peasy. Purina® Pro Plan Savor® Shredded Blend is available near you! Check your local specialty pet retailer, Petsmart, Petco, or even order it online through Amazon. You can have it delivered straight to your door, just like we did.
How did we RATE this Nutritious Cat Food?
We gave Purina Pro Plan Cat a 5 Meow Review! (That’s the best you can get). Here’s why:
Josie’s Review:
When I first came to live with mom, dad, and Rory, I had been a little neglected. I was the runt of the litter, and apparently that meant I wasn’t worth anything to the lady where I was born. My fur was not shiny, I was scrawny, and I didn’t know how to do anything (thank goodness Jinx took good care of me). So, I know first hand just how important good nutrition and lots of love are to a cat. This new Shredded Blend tastes great, makes me feel good, and keeps me happy and playful. And my family loves it when their little miss sexy kitty is happy-go-lucky!
Jinx’s Review:
My day is run by the clock…well, ok, my stomach. I like to sit back and look at the clock, so I can tell mom and dad that it is time to feed me. Hey, somebody has to keep watch…don’t judge me. This dry cat food has a hearty texture and great taste, and I can smell the heavenly aroma from the farthest corner of the house. It helps me get my exercise — I break my personal sprint records getting to my food bowl for Purina Pro Plan Cat.
(or, as they are more affectionately known, Jinx & Josie)
A week and a half ago, September 14th, we adopted two adorable little kittens–one boy, Jinx, and one petite little girl, Josie. They were born on June 29th, and Josie is less than half the size of her brother weighing just barely 2 pounds at 12 weeks old. We are so happy we took both kittens, because I don’t think either one of them would have done well alone. They are so playful, and Jinx really takes good care of his sister. There names fit them perfectly. Jinx is on the mischievous side, while Josie is dainty and gentle.
Josie must have been the runt of the litter, and no one seemed to care too much if she got to eat or not. Her fur was dull, she was skiddish of people, and she did not even know how to play. Well, she is a smart girl and a quick learner. Her fur is even starting to shine up like her brother’s with love and good food.
Jinx and Josie love to play and cuddle with each other as well as with us. They are learning their names, and even starting to come when called. Rory, especially, is thrilled with the kittens; she has wanted one for years.
They are black kitties with a dark brown striping in their undercoat, and bright green eyes–so pretty. Their coloring makes it challenging to snap good photos, but we’re having fun trying. LOL
It’s been an exciting time, and I’m sure there is loads more fun to come!
Welcome to your new home, Jinx & Josie!
