Morning Routines Make Great Day Starters

I love the quiet, early (but not too early) morning hours of the day. My family is still asleep, and I have those moments all to myself. My morning routines restore my body and soul, refresh my spirit, and set me on a great path for a happy and productive day.

Morning Routines

Make Great Day Starters

There is some thing comforting about having a routine. It provides a sense of security and calm. My morning routines are important to me, and they make me feel better as a whole person. Each day brings new challenges, but with my routine in place, I know I can meet whatever lies ahead.

5 Morning Routines I don’t like to miss:

1. Morning Walk with Audiobook

I love to go walking in the cool crispness of morning. Whether it is at a park or along the beach, the scenery, scents, nature, and wildlife always put a smile on my face. Sometimes life can be stressful, and these walks help alleviate the pressure bringing serenity and tranquility to my life. One of my most favorite things about my walk is enjoying an audiobook. I love to read, especially cozy mysteries, and reading via bluetooth while walking is fantastic. It is also a great motivator to walk each day, as I can’t wait to hear more of my story. I listen to my audiobooks while doing chores as well, it makes everything go faster, and I don’t mind having to do the boring work as much.

2. Coffee and Reflection

There is nothing like the aroma of fresh coffee brewing in the morning. I may have a slight coffee addiction, okay, it’s a big coffee addiction. I love to have several cuppas while I relax, do a morning devotional, or just have a few moments of self reflection. And, then, I may have a couple more cups for good measure.

3. Breakfast and Vitamins

With my coffee and reflection, I am often times fixing my breakfast. I know you have all heard it before, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is true, even if it is just a bowl of cereal. Perhaps, you may want to try my Cracklin’ Oat Bran Vanilla Buttermilk Pancakes or Peanut Butter Raspberry Smoothie. I find that when I have a good breakfast, I have a much more productive day. Everything runs more smoothly and timely. Part of my breakfast ritual is taking my vitamins, they are quick and easy to take, and help make living a busy, healthy lifestyle easier. I recently found Centrum’s NEW Vitamints and MultiGummies at Walgreens. They taste great and  have no overpowering and horrible vitamin aftertaste. Blech! I hate that awful aftertaste. The MultiGummies are easy to chew and have nice fruity flavors. Centrum’s Raspberry Vitamints are my favorite! They are essential vitamins you enjoy like a mint, and they do leave your mouth refreshingly minty.

I was also happy to discover that Walgreens has a partnership with Vitamin Angels, an organization that gets vitamins to kids in need around the globe. Walgreens makes a donation to Vitamin Angels with every vitamin purchase, “Get Vitamins Here. Change Lives Everywhere.”

4. Organizing My Day

Every night, I think about what needs to be accomplished during the next day. So, in the morning, I like to take everyone’s schedule into account, and any last minutes things that have cropped up (this happens quite often with Luke’s business, his dad, and Rory). I love to make lists, and scratch items off as I get them finished. I find the accountability of a list motivating and a completed list satisfying.

5. Cuddle and Playtime with Jinx and Josie

Ah, my two adorable kitties, Jinx and Josie, are the sweetest little things. Jinx likes to get up early. He thinks his stomach is always hungry. And, if I try to sleep in just a little, he will jump up on the bed and purr in my face (his whiskers tickling me), nudge the door so it makes noise, and finally resort to irritating and waking up Josie to join in his plight. He is a drama queen. That big boy needs to be held and cuddled every morning first thing, and of late, he needs to be walked to the kitchen to his food bowl–he doesn’t want to go alone…geesh, the whimp. LOL Josie patiently waits for her loving cuddles. The cats run amok and play, while I’m off for my walk and make my way through the rest of my morning routine. Then, they know it is cuddle and playtime with mom. Jinx and Josie are so much fun, and give so much love, they are definitely restorative and energizing. You can follow all the cute cat antics of Jinx and Josie on Instagram with their hashtag: #JinxandJosie

From there, it is onto my list of things to do for the day. I hope you can use my routine as inspiration to create your own daily habit if you don’t already have one. If you do, what morning routines do you enjoy?

Healthy Start To A New Year

Healthy Ideas for a Healthy New Year

Join in the fun with Audio-Walkers

Ok, I have a confession to make. I was a Salt-aholic! I love salt. You know those people who salt things before they even taste them? Well, that was me. Not healthy.

After I turned… ach-’em… 50, I decided it was past time to cut down on my salt intake. Although I knew it was the right and healthy choice, it was going to be hard. So, I set my goal to a No-Salt September.

What exactly is a No-Salt September? Since it was my own invention, I made my own rules. I cut way back on the salt I added to any of my cooking, and I added zero salt to anything I ate–at home, at restaurants, or with friends. That meant no salt on my salads, salsa, veggies, or sandwiches–not even on my beloved steak or prime rib.  I was determined to add no extra salt at all.

And I am super proud to say that one year and four months later, I am still not adding salt to anything! The only exception is my occasional soft boiled or poached eggs, where I very lightly dust them with salt. No-Salt September was a success! And, I am healthier for it.

After, I jumped out of the salt pool, I decided to make healthier food choices, and get a little more exercise too. So, I started walking. There is nothing like a fresh morning walking through the park or along the beach, while listening to an audiobook.

Yes my friends, the audiobook is the perfect walking companion! Not only does it keep you from being bored, it motivates you to go on your next walk, and the next, and the next. Some days I find myself walking morning and afternoon just because I don’t want to put down my book! LOL I even do housework, water my plants, and sometimes cook with my audiobooks.

Last August, shortly after I made my return to blogging, I put together a Walking With Audiobooks Challenge. I  have decided to re-vamp this idea for the new year. Instead of doing a month-long challenge, I put together the new…

Audio-Walkers Page

…on my blog, where you can go All Year Long. Find it in the Menu below the blog header.

The Audio-Walkers Page has two places for you to join in the fun.

The first is the Audiobooks–Audio-Walkers – What We’re Reading. Add the link to the book you are listening to or reading. If you need help finding a summary and cover photo try Goodreads or Shelfari. What a great way to find new books! Leave a review or encouragement in the comments.

If you need an audiobook, check out your local library, or OverDrive, which brings your library right to your computer. You can also purchase them through Audible or Tantor Audio, bookstores, and online.

The second is the Blog List–Blogging Audio-Walkers. If you have a blog, and are participating in Audio-Walkers by listening, reading, or walking, add a link to your Blogs Home Page. We can grow as a community of book loving bloggers, and help our blogs grow along the way.

Share the fun and invite your friends! Let Audio-Walkers help you attain your goal of getting healthy in the New Year. Be sure to use our Registered Hashtag!

Don’t forget to add your links!

You can also join the Audio-Walkers Facebook Group for more friendship, book discussions, motivation, and encouragement.

You can add your links here, or on the Audio-Walkers Page. Please remember this is a family friendly blog.

Walking With AudioBooks

Like Walking? Enjoy Reading?

Put The Two Together!

I love to go for long walks in the park or along the beach. There is just something relaxing and rejuvenating about the peacefulness of a walk.

I used to go for walks on a regular basis, but as the kids’ schedules became busier, I found myself cutting out my walks in order to drive them to their school, social, or sporting events. I had lost my “me-time,” and I missed it. I had also missed a wonderful workout.

This past March, I decided I needed to get back into a routine of walking. Walks are healthy—mentally and physically. So, I began my daily treks. The first couple of days were nice, but then, I thought I needed to figure out some way to help keep me motivated to walk each day. My iTouch came to mind; it would make the perfect walking companion.

I have not had much time recently to read—a pastime I truly enjoy. I decided that my daily walks would be a wonderful time to catch-up on my reading. Audiobooks—what a phenomenal motivator! I could not wait for my next day’s walk to listen to more of my story. I also found that the audiobooks lengthened my walks. I wasn’t concentrating on aches and pains, or how tired I was, an added benefit.

Over the past six months, I have listened to twelve books, and am well into the thirteenth. I chose to get better acquainted with authors in my genre of writing, the cozy mystery. Authors such as: Diane Mott Davidson, Joanne Fluke, Rhys Bowen, and M.C. Beaton, to name a few. I am loving it!

I own a lot of audiobook recordings, but it’s all right if you don’t. I found this amazing website called, OverDrive. OverDrive brings your library right to your computer; it has a large selection of ePub and audiobooks for the borrowing. Check it out, and see if your library subscribes to OverDrive.

I like to keep track of things, so I thought it would be fun to create a bookshelf on Shelfari specifically for my “Walking Books.” The shelf allows me not only to have a record of what books I have read, but serves as visual inspiration and motivation. You can also set-up a bookshelf on GoodReads. Check out my GoodReads Bookshelf in the sidebar. (I love the look of my Shelfari Bookshelf, but my free WordPress blog doesn’t support the Shelfari widget. 🙁 So sad…)

Up for a Challenge?

What would you think of participating in a challenge—a challenge to walk for your health, and read books at the same time? It could be fun. And we all know that doing things with a group helps keep you focused on your task.

I will work on setting up the challenge. I hope you will join me. Watch for details.

Have you ever listened to an audiobook?

Do you have any favorite authors or genres that you like to read?
