We always love to BOO the neighborhood kids, but we also plan to BOO Luke’s 86-year-old dad and his friends down at the donut shop. They have been meeting there each morning for decades.

These Halloween candy baskets are great for a classroom party, any group get-together, you name it. BOO your local fire department, police station, or hospital. You can find some cute stickers, tissue paper, bags, and cards from American Greetings too.

Let’s get crafting!

Halloween Candy Baskets

Supplies:

  • Free Printables – Download Here: Pre-Colored Shapes or Color-Your-Own Shapes
  • Cardstock
  • Glue Stick
  • Colored Pencils, Markers, Crayons, etc.
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Bone Folder (or another flat edge)
  • Paper Cutter (helpful, but optional)

Directions:

  1. Print your choice of pre-colored or color-your-own Halloween shapes.
  2. Cut out the shapes leaving a flat edge at the bottom, and an edging around the shape. These shapes will be the sides of your candy basket.

  1. Measure and mark cardstock. You will need two pieces cut for each basket — one for the basket (3-1/2 inches x 7 inches) and one for the handle (7 inches x 1 inch).
  2. Cut the cardstock for all the baskets you will be making.

  1. On the cut out Basket card stock, measure in 1/2 inch from the long edges on each side. Draw a line with a pencil, then score each pencil line with a bone folder or other flat-edge.
  2. Fold the scored long edges inward.

  1. Cut notches into the 1/2 inch folded edges to make it easier to fit the basket onto the shapes.
  2. Lay the notched basket cardstock flat and place glue on notches, both edges.
  3. Fold the notches to a right angle so the glued sides are on the outside of the basket.
  4. Attached glued notches to a pair of matching Halloween-themed shapes in a U-type shape, so there is an opening at the top. You will be able to move and adjust the notches to fit each shape as needed. Make sure that your shapes are turned the same way with the flat edge at the bottom.
  5. Let glue set.
  6. Dab glue on both ends of the handle, and attach to the top inside of the basket cardstock. Let glue set.

  1. Print a BOO Card for your basket.

BOO It Forward

Voila! You now have a spooktacular Halloween Candy Basket! Now, throw a party or BOO a friend and share your Halloween spirit.

Paint – The Ultimate In Refreshing Your Home For Spring

Paint – The Ultimate In Refreshing Your Home For Spring

Up the ante on your Spring Cleaning with a fresh coat of paint, an accent wall, or new front door color. Get a FREE Color Consultation and a FREE 8-ounce SAMPLE! Live colorfully and beyond wild imagination.

Update Your Home with Paint

It’s the Ultimate in Spring Cleaning

Luke and I have been talking about painting our home for quite a while, and finally, the time is here! We are super excited for the refreshing update to our living spaces. At the moment, we have white walls everywhere — except Rory’s room, where we did a complete makeover about a year and a half ago using Dunn-Edwards Paints, Break of Day for the walls with Whisper trim.

Professional Color Consultation

We knew we wanted to add some color. So, we scheduled an appointment with the  Dunn-Edwards Professional Color Advisor. Debbie was amazing! She sat down with us for a little over an hour talking with us, looking through the sample fabrics, photos, and flooring we’d brought along. We discussed the gloss levels for the paints and if any primer was needed.

Debbie also helped us with the various sundries we would need for the job — tape, rollers, brushes, pans, dropcloths, putty, putty knife, sandpaper, caulk and caulking gun, etc. Dunn-Edwards has everything you could possibly need for painting and/or staining! Don’t be intimidated,  Dunn-Edwards is not just for contractors — they are for the average Joe Home Owner too! They make painting easy.

Debbie was very knowledgeable and helpful, which was extremely helpful in navigating the 1,996 colors in Dunn-Edwards Perfect Palette® color system. Having a Color Advisor made the difficult color choosing process much easier. We went home with a couple of sample colors to test in our space. It is so important to see how the colors actually look in the lighting of your home.

Sampling and Ordering the Paints

The entire staff at Dunn-Edwards is friendly, professional, and extremely helpful. Tim, the assistant manager, got my samples ready for me. He even cut down a box to protect my truck — just in case.

Once we had painted our sample colors onto poster boards, we placed them on the walls and decided that to really make our fireplace pop, we wanted to try a little darker shade on the one wall. So, I went back and sat down for a few minutes with Debbie again. She helped me find just the right color. Bringing home another sample, I couldn’t wait to get it on poster board and see how it looked around the fireplace and our new mantel.

The Paint Calculator on the Dunn-Edwards website was easy to use and helped us figure out how much paint we needed for our project. Finally, we were ready to order our paint. I was off to the paint store. I gave Debbie my paint order and supplies list, and a few minutes later, I was walking out the door  — eager to start our project.

Prepping and Painting

With our paints and supplies taken care of, we began prepping the project. This 50-year-old house that spent about a third of its life as a rental property, needed a LOT of work. We patched and re-patched previous repairs; pulled the windows sills out and sanded them down to the bare wood, and more, but the hard work was going to be worth it in the end.

The Before Photos

As you can see, the walls, the cabinets, the doors, everything is WHITE! We were desperate to Live Colorfully. And, so, the project begins. The ultimate in refreshing our home for spring. Check out this video!

Dunn-Edwards Paints and supplies are excellent high-quality products. Everest Ultra Premium paint is a self-primer and has great one coat coverage. Our walls needed so much repair, that we chose to use the Multi-Surface Primer Ultra Grip; it is fantastic too.

Since April is Earth Month, I want to point out Dunn-Edwards mission to provide the best performing paint while being environmentally sound to protect the health and well-being of their customers. Their LEED Gold-certified paint manufacturing facility, eco-efficient products, ingredients, and labeling are all part of the green legacy that makes Dunn-Edwards a leader in their field.

Our Final Colors from the Perfect Palette® Color System

  • Graham Cracker – DE6144
  • High Noon – DEC743
  • Inside Passage – DEC764
  • Whisper Gray – DEC785
  • Whisper – DEW340

We chose the Velvet Gloss for these walls. It really adds a depth of color that is warm and welcoming. We will use a Semi-Gloss for the doors, trim, kitchen, and cabinets.

This is just the first post of our home makeover. So keep an eye out for updates coming soon.

Bedroom Furniture – 10 Things To Keep In Mind

Find out what 10 things to consider when choosing your bedroom furniture. Your private space should be peaceful, comfortable, and cozy.

10 Things to Keep in Mind While Choosing Bedroom Furniture

When you step into your bedroom you should be enveloped by a feeling of absolute peace. Your bedroom is one of the most private areas of your home, and decorating it is purely for your benefit and not for visitors. How, though, do you choose the right styles of bedroom furniture when there is no end to what you can pick from? This guide will help you choose what complements your bedroom and makes it cozy and comfortable, as it ought to be.

  1. Bedroom Size:

Keeping your bedroom size in mind will help you choose furniture wisely. You need to measure your bedroom exactly and plan where you wish to keep each piece of furniture. Lack of planning may lead to impulse buying, and you may end up with furniture that will be useless. Instead of crowding your room because of bad planning or not taking your room’s size into consideration while buying bedroom furniture, plan wisely so that you’ll be pleased with the result.

  1. Bedroom Style:

When you’re buying furniture, they should be considered and match with the overall theme of your bedroom.  For example, if your bedroom’s overall décor is contemporary or transitional, your furniture should blend in.

  1. Room Color Scheme:

Choose bedroom furniture colors that blend in with the color scheme so that your furniture fits in with the rest of the room. Bad color coordination can ruin your sleep and make your bedroom anything but a comfortable haven of peace.

  1. Design:

Take into consideration the likes and dislikes of whoever is going to use the bedroom that you’re furnishing. If you’re furnishing a kid’s bedroom, choose cool furniture that they will love. On the other hand, adults may prefer a more sophisticated look.

  1. Space Saving Options:

Consider whether your bedroom has sufficient space to accommodate all that you plan to buy. Instead of buying a bed and a separate chest of drawers, opt for a bed with storage drawers fitted with them. Instead of regular bookcases, choose hanging bookshelves that save space.

  1. Budget:

Bedroom furniture is not cheap and therefore set a budget and plan what you can get within that based on what takes the highest priority. Never buy more than you can afford or you won’t enjoy your purchase.

  1. Material and Quality:

Choose bedroom furniture that is tough and durable. No one wants to lie on a bed that collapses after a while or that isn’t comfortable. Most good furniture comes with warranty and proper details on the material used.

  1. Accessories:

Some of your bedroom furniture may come with necessary accessories, so check on these. For example, your bed may come with an optional headboard or your storage cabinets may have wall-mount kits. Check on accessories before purchasing so that you get all that you’re paying for.

  1. Price:

Before finalizing on your bedroom furniture, compare the price with multiple stores and suppliers with the quality in mind of course. Rather than choosing your furniture out of a store that puts on the price to pay for their showy outlet, choose it out of a store that gives you good quality at a reasonable price.

  1. Reviews:

If you’ve opted to buy your bedroom furniture from an online seller or a well-known local outlet, check on reviews from those who’ve purchased from them. Also, check with friends for references so that you can be sure to get your furniture from a reputed dealer who will give you good value for your money.

Christmas Gifts Your Tech-savvy Kids Will Adore

Our friend, Peter Minkoff, is back to share some great Christmas Gifts ideas for the kids on your shopping list.

Christmas Gifts Your Tech-savvy Kids Will Adore

In the era of technological developments and expansion of the Internet, kids have slightly different wishes and expectations than we had had when we were young, when it comes to Christmas gifts. It is sometimes difficult to live up to those expectations, simply because we as parents are not familiar with the newest gadgets and devices. If you are one of us – don’t worry! Here is a list of Christmas gifts your tech-savvy kids will adore.

  1. Portable Speakers

Today’s kids love listening to music wherever they go, and they will all agree that sometimes a smartphone’s speakers are not enough. This is exactly why portable speakers should jump in. They can ensure your kids terrific sounds that will last for up to 100 hours without recharging. You can even buy those for all of your kids – stacking them together will increase the volume to the max. These usually come with a travel pouch and USB charger, and there is often a light underneath them, which turns on when speakers are working.

  1. Smart Watch for Kids

Wearable technology is definitely becoming a part of the mainstream, and that is true for kids as well. Smart watches that are aimed at 5-12 year-olds include a camera, a voice recorder with funny voice effects for playback, and video recording with the possibility of editing, as well as educational games. What is great is that a USB port enables downloading all the photos and videos to a computer. These also feature small colour touch screens with different watch faces that your kids can choose from. Besides that, there are some traditional features, such as stopwatch and countdown timer.

  1. Barbie’s Colour Changing Handbag

Even though Barbie doll is famous for the iconic pink colour, this latest toy proves that not everything related to her has to be pink. This clever handbag changes its colour by using sensors on the rear and numerous LED lights. Your daughter just needs to press her new handbag against a piece of clothing she wants to match it up with, and press the button on the handbag. A few seconds later, the primarily white bag lights up and changes colour into the one that it was pressed against. This intriguing item is particularly appropriate for younger girls, simply because they will be thrilled to see how the colours change in just several seconds.

  1. Tech Doll

An interactive smart doll is a perfect choice for your tech-savvy daughter. Even though she looks like a typical doll, she can actually talk and respond to voices. She is capable of answering some general knowledge questions and communicating with your daughter, however, in a slightly robotic manner. This doll can even connect to the Internet via smartphone or Android app, and find correct answers online. Besides that, you should know that she does not allow swear words, which is very important – she responds with “That is not appropriate!”

  1. Video Games

Both teenagers and younger children love playing video games. Having that in mind, it is always a good idea to make your kids happy by purchasing the one that is age-appropriate, fun and educational at the same time. There are many great games that can be played online for free, such as Poptropica Mythology Island, but you can consider purchasing your kids an exclusive membership as a Christmas present. This will allow them to play some islands that are member-exclusive, as well as to have unlimited costumes and special powers in the game. You can be sure that they will be thrilled to get such a gift!

As you can see, picking a gift for your tech-savvy children can be quite a tricky task, especially if you are not familiar with gadgets and the latest technological improvements. However, that does not mean that you will be unable to choose something appropriate – just listen to your kids’ wishes and pay attention to their personal interests. Of course, these gifts require slightly greater amounts of money, but that’s fine. Your youngest ones will be ecstatic, and that’s what counts.

12 Tips On Choosing The Right Paint Colors

12 Tips On Choosing The Right Paint Colors

What should you take into consideration?

You may have read previously that we are turning a room in Luke’s house into a Guest Room / Rory Room. You can read about some of our Bedding Ideas, here. A major part of re-doing any room is painting, but what color do you choose? Choosing the right Paint Colors is always one of the most difficult decisions to make.

Painting a house or just a room is a large investment — in time, hard work, and money. Add to this the absolute plethora of color choices, and a decision is not easy. So, how do you choose just the right paint colors for your wants, wishes, and needs?  Luckily, I have a dozen tips to aid you in making this decision, and lead you to a color that you will love.

Sample Chips, get your Tips here…

  1. What mood do you want to create and inspire?
Different rooms in your home are used for different types of living. Think about how you live in the room you are planning to paint, and what feeling you want the room to express. Our guest room for example, we want to bright and cheery, yet cozy and relaxing.
  1. Look for color scheme inspiration.
Find color inspiration from your other home decor, fabrics, magazines, Pinterest Pins, Color Scheme swatches, or Open Houses. The Design Seeds website is an awesome resource for color inspiration.
  1. Gather paint brochures.
Not only will paint brochures give you ideas for color schemes, but you can see the actual paint colors that are available from the brands of paint you are interested in using.
  1. Consider the furniture style and color.
Think about your furniture style. If you have shabby chic furniture, you are probably not going to want something ultra modern and cold.

  1. Think about transition and flow.
This is important. You want your home to feel cohesive and inviting, and not just a bunch of chopped up rooms stuck together. Pay attention to what you see of the room you are painting from the other rooms and hallways on your house, as well as what of the rest of the house you see from the room you are painting.
  1. Choose a basic 5-color palette for the house.
Color adds warmth, and depth, and provides a pop. It touches the soul and makes you feel. So, in conjunction with the previous item, transition and flow, decide on a color scheme for the entire house. Now, this does not mean precise colors, but rather just a basic scheme. Pick three to five colors — 1. A White; 2. A Neutral; 3. An Accent Color; 4. A Coordinating Color; and 5. Another Coordinating Color.
  1. Get sample paint cards or strips, and place them on the wall you will be painting.
You are re-paingintg anyway, so go ahead and tape those sample cards right to the wall. Tape from the back so you leave the color fully showing. Leave them up for days, a week, or more.
  1. Make note of lighting (both natural and electric), and understand undertones.
Light plays on colors in different ways, and differing light can bring out or mute the undertones in the paint colors. What are the undertones in the colors you like versus the colors you are not liking? Yellow, Red, Blue, Green? The easiest way to determine undertone is by holding the paint chip next to a white piece of paper. It is easier to find a color you like once you know what color group you favor.

  1. Narrow your choices to 2 – 5 colors, and buy sample jars of paint.
You can purchase small sample jars of paint. They are not that expensive, and it is by far the best way to help you truly decide on a color. Sample cans cost a lot less than a gallon or two of the wrong color.
  1. Paint samples onto Poster Board to make large color swatches and hang on the wall.
This is one of my favorite tips. Hang poster boards on the wall and paint them with your selected paint colors. You have just made a large paint swatch. This gives you a much better idea of what the true paint color is, and how it will look on your wall.
  1. Check paint swatches at varying times of day and lighting.
Look at your painted swatches at all times of the day and night, and with various lighting, so you know how your color will look under every circumstance.
  1. DO NOT RUSH into a decision.
This is probably the most important of all the tips. Paint is something you live with day in and day out for years on end. In the long run, waiting a few weeks or a month to choose the right paint colors is really no time at all.

I hope you find these tips helpful in choosing the right paint colors for your project. If you have any other tips or suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

Color Schemes

Color Schemes

I love color! Color schemes from the soft and subtle to the bright and bold make my world go round. I find it amazing just how much color can affect your moods and how you feel. Think about it… if you are somewhere that is dark and dingy, do you like it? Or do you feel depressed, sad, scared, or intimidated? If you are surrounded by light, you feel safe, happy, and relaxed. Add color to these places and you can change the feel and mood along with the decor.
