The first day of school means PICTURES! So, be prepared, grab your Windex® Original Glass Cleaner and make moments shine. You definitely don’t want grubby fingerprints on windows in the background.

Give these creative and easy ideas a try.

  • Use Chalk Markers to write and draw on glass or chalkboard.

I did this with Rory this year — college bound. We have pictures from every school year of the kids in front of our car or truck. It is a nice way to look back and remember what life was like at that moment in time, including our ride.

A couple of really nice things about using chalk markers on the windows — they are easy to write with and very easy to clean with Windex® products, check it out…

Clean your windows first. Windex® Original Glass Wipes work great for this.

Draw and Write on your windows to make your moments shine. Then, it is easy to clean up with the Windex® Original Glass Cleaner spray. The spray helps loosen up the dried chalk. Watch how easy…

  • Use Sidewalk Chalk and draw a large number for the grade your child is entering on the driveway. Decorate the number with style and personal flair. Then, have your child sit in the number or next to it for the photo.
  • Make a small pennant banner that your child can hold for the picture. Write or glue the words: First Day of School, 1st Grade, 2017, or whatever you want to say to create a special memory.
  • Frame a printable and have your child hold it for the picture. You can download and personalize the FREE PRINTABLE I created just for you.

Remember, be camera-ready with Windex® Original Glass Cleaner or Windex® Original Glass Wipes.

Then, take advantage of this fabulous OFFER: Buy 2 Windex® products and get $20 to shop at Shutterfly®. This is a limited time offer. Disclaimer: Offer valid 7/15/17 – 12/1/17. Visit here for terms and conditions. Notice those dates, you can buy more Windex® products and use the offer for Halloween and Thanksgiving photos too!

Get Organized for the New School Year:

Start the school year with a plan. Children do very well with a schedule, it gives them a sense of purpose and a semblance of security. If they know what to expect next, you will have an easier time getting them to accomplish it. Schedules help set your child up for success!

  • Set Schedules
  • Morning: Wake up time, eat breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, leave for school, etc.
  • After School: Have a snack, do homework, play outside, eat dinner, quiet reading time or studying, take a bath, pack your backpack for the next day, set out your shoes and clothes for school, etc.
  • Bed Time: Have a set time your child is supposed to go to bed. Making sure your child gets enough sleep each night and is well-rested will help to ensure they have a good learning day a school.
  • Have a specified place for backpacks and other items to be placed. If you are not searching all over the house for things your morning will go much smoother. Less stress, less fighting, and arguing is better for everyone’s day.

I have created a couple Organization Charts that will help your child stay on task between getting home from school and going to bed. You can download these FREE PRINTABLES. You have a choice of two different color schemes.

Put this chart on your refrigerator and use magnets to mark the accomplishments daily.

Homework Station Ideas:

Homework stations were a big part of a successful school year for us. We had one set up in our kitchen, where the kids could sit at the table to do their work, and I could be getting dinner ready for the family. The nice thing was that I was there and available for any questions that may arise. We had a cabinet where all of our homework necessities were stored.

We also had homework supplies in the car/truck. Why not take advantage of the time while one child is sitting around waiting for the other sibling for sports practice or ballet lessons? The more you get finished early, the more free time you have at home at night as a family.

  • Set up a place in your home where your child(ren) will do homework every day.
  • Find somewhere to store all our homework supplies: notebook paper; graph paper; pencils; erasers; glue; paper clips; stapler and staples, colored pencils; crayons; markers; etc. Be sure supplies are easily accessible to your child.
  • Use a Lazy Susan or turntable to place your supplies on the table. That way your kids can just spin the supplies to reach what they need.

Supplies on the go.

  • Keep a smaller amount of the same school supplies in your vehicle. Colored pencils work better than crayons and markers as they do not melt.
  • Have chairs for your kids, so they have a place to sit.
  • A lap desk or board helps to give stability for writing.

Whatever you are doing, however you celebrate and organize for the new school year, remember to get things clean and make your moments sparkle with Windex® products, America’s #1 glass cleaner — famous for streak-free shine!* For more information and ideas for use follow Windex® on Facebook and Twitter.

And do make use of the Shutterfly® offer, generations of your family will thank you.

Make A DIY Custom Wire Basket

Learn how to make your own wire basket from regular contributor, Michelle James.

DIY Custom Wire Basket

Have you ever been searching and searching for a basket to fit a particular space in your home, or organizing and you just cannot find the right size?  It happens to me all of the time.  So, I decided to learn how to make my own custom wire baskets.

DIY Custom Wire Basket:

If you would like to make your own wire baskets, here is what you will need.

Supplies needed:

  • Hardware Cloth – you could use chicken wire too
  • Tin Snips
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Gloves
  • Sharpie Marker
  • Straight Edge – I used a piece of wood

First, decide the length and the width of your basket.  Mine needed to be 17 inches X 15 inches.  Then, decide how tall it will be.  I could only go 3.5 inches because the hardware cloth we purchased (for a different project) was only 24 inches wide.  The 17 inches plus 7 inches equals the 24 inches.  So, that was how tall I would make it.

Use the tin snips, and cut out a piece that is big enough for the sides and the bottom of the basket.  My piece was 24 x 22 inches.  This was the 17 x 15 bottom and the 3.5 inches on each side.  (total of 7 inches for the sides)

I know…I don’t like math either but this is how we use it in real life.  Good thing it isn’t any harder than that.

Then, you need to cut out the corners of this piece to form the sides that will be bent up to a vertical position.

Start by using a sharpie and marking the corner point.  My sides will be 3.5 inches; so, I measured 3.5 inches from the sides to find the corner point.

It is important to cut one side of each corner close to the cross wire and the other side away from the cross wire, so the little wires are hanging out.  You will be using these little wires to wrap and attach the side corners together.

Bend up the sides using a straight edge of some sort to help keep it folding in a straight line.

Now, get the needle nose pliers to wrap the small wires onto the cross wire of the opposite side.  You will end up with this.

Nice, right?

Mind ended up with a twist in it.

I tried and tried to get it to straighten out.  I think a lot had to do with the size of the basket.  A smaller one may not be so bad.  I was able to fix it most of the way, but I knew it would be holding either fabric scraps or magazines. So, I knew it would not show when it was on the shelf.  And, it doesn’t.  Here is the final result in the organizer cabinet I made from the old 70’s cassette, cd and vhs holders.  I love these and look for them now.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and will try to make your own wire baskets.  They are pretty easy, but be sure to wear your gloves.

I may still make a liner for this basket.  I think it would look really nice.

Have a great day,

~Michelle

Morning Routines Make Great Day Starters

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser, Centrum Vitamin Angels. All opinions are mine alone. #EssentialVitamins #CollectiveBias

I love the quiet, early (but not too early) morning hours of the day. My family is still asleep, and I have those moments all to myself. My morning routines restore my body and soul, refresh my spirit, and set me on a great path for a happy and productive day.

Morning Routines

Make Great Day Starters

There is some thing comforting about having a routine. It provides a sense of security and calm. My morning routines are important to me, and they make me feel better as a whole person. Each day brings new challenges, but with my routine in place, I know I can meet whatever lies ahead.

5 Morning Routines I don’t like to miss:

1. Morning Walk with Audiobook

I love to go walking in the cool crispness of morning. Whether it is at a park or along the beach, the scenery, scents, nature, and wildlife always put a smile on my face. Sometimes life can be stressful, and these walks help alleviate the pressure bringing serenity and tranquility to my life. One of my most favorite things about my walk is enjoying an audiobook. I love to read, especially cozy mysteries, and reading via bluetooth while walking is fantastic. It is also a great motivator to walk each day, as I can’t wait to hear more of my story. I listen to my audiobooks while doing chores as well, it makes everything go faster, and I don’t mind having to do the boring work as much.

2. Coffee and Reflection

There is nothing like the aroma of fresh coffee brewing in the morning. I may have a slight coffee addiction, okay, it’s a big coffee addiction. I love to have several cuppas while I relax, do a morning devotional, or just have a few moments of self reflection. And, then, I may have a couple more cups for good measure.

3. Breakfast and Vitamins

With my coffee and reflection, I am often times fixing my breakfast. I know you have all heard it before, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is true, even if it is just a bowl of cereal. Perhaps, you may want to try my Cracklin’ Oat Bran Vanilla Buttermilk Pancakes or Peanut Butter Raspberry Smoothie. I find that when I have a good breakfast, I have a much more productive day. Everything runs more smoothly and timely. Part of my breakfast ritual is taking my vitamins, they are quick and easy to take, and help make living a busy, healthy lifestyle easier. I recently found Centrum’s NEW Vitamints and MultiGummies at Walgreens. They taste great and  have no overpowering and horrible vitamin aftertaste. Blech! I hate that awful aftertaste. The MultiGummies are easy to chew and have nice fruity flavors. Centrum’s Raspberry Vitamints are my favorite! They are essential vitamins you enjoy like a mint, and they do leave your mouth refreshingly minty.

I was also happy to discover that Walgreens has a partnership with Vitamin Angels, an organization that gets vitamins to kids in need around the globe. Walgreens makes a donation to Vitamin Angels with every vitamin purchase, “Get Vitamins Here. Change Lives Everywhere.”

4. Organizing My Day

Every night, I think about what needs to be accomplished during the next day. So, in the morning, I like to take everyone’s schedule into account, and any last minutes things that have cropped up (this happens quite often with Luke’s business, his dad, and Rory). I love to make lists, and scratch items off as I get them finished. I find the accountability of a list motivating and a completed list satisfying.

5. Cuddle and Playtime with Jinx and Josie

Ah, my two adorable kitties, Jinx and Josie, are the sweetest little things. Jinx likes to get up early. He thinks his stomach is always hungry. And, if I try to sleep in just a little, he will jump up on the bed and purr in my face (his whiskers tickling me), nudge the door so it makes noise, and finally resort to irritating and waking up Josie to join in his plight. He is a drama queen. That big boy needs to be held and cuddled every morning first thing, and of late, he needs to be walked to the kitchen to his food bowl–he doesn’t want to go alone…geesh, the whimp. LOL Josie patiently waits for her loving cuddles. The cats run amok and play, while I’m off for my walk and make my way through the rest of my morning routine. Then, they know it is cuddle and playtime with mom. Jinx and Josie are so much fun, and give so much love, they are definitely restorative and energizing. You can follow all the cute cat antics of Jinx and Josie on Instagram with their hashtag: #JinxandJosie

From there, it is onto my list of things to do for the day. I hope you can use my routine as inspiration to create your own daily habit if you don’t already have one. If you do, what morning routines do you enjoy?

Are essential vitamins part of your daily routine? Don’t forget to purchase vitamins at Walgreens, and be a part of donating to Vitamin Angels. Learn more about this philanthropic program in this video.

Cleaning Hacks For Kids’ Rooms

Is your child’s room driving you crazy? Get some real life Cleaning Hacks to manage the mess from our new Regular Contributor, Megan Wild. You are going to love Megan’s ideas.

Hacks for Spring Cleaning Kids’ Rooms

Cleaning Hacks to Manage the Mess!

It’s bedtime, and the lights are going out around the house. Your little ones are climbing into their beds, patiently awaiting – and prolonging – your goodnight. This is when you bravely enter the room.

You find yourself walking through a carefully cleared path of clutter. One step at a time you inch forward. Step. Step. Step … until YOW!

As the pain registers and an inappropriate word sneaks into your mind’s vocabulary, you continue to quickly hobble to the bedside of your giggling child. They – of course – always seem to navigate the minefield of toys and clothes quite nimbly.

When you’ve made it, you survey the damage, swearing to yourself that tomorrow will be different. It will be clean tomorrow. It has to be. It just has to be.

With these spring cleaning hacks and organizational tips, a new day is coming.

Use Large Buckets and Bins

Sometimes it’s the desire to have everything in its proper place that really does a parent in. Go easy on yourself by using large buckets and bins to clear up miscellaneous toys, books and socks. Look for ones with lids if a little extra protection and privacy is desirable.

Different sizes will allow for the storage of both small and large, bulky items, resulting in a space that is cleared up in no time and looks like a million bucks.

Create Picture Labels

Help your kids understand where everything goes by using pictures of the items where they should be kept. Whether hand-drawn, clip-art or snapshots from your camera, picture labels on bins and shelves will give kids a sense of familiarity and understanding where their toys and clothes need to go when they’re not being used. You may even consider making this a rainy day project, getting assistance from your little ones to make the photos in a way that is interactive and fun.

Put Together an Organization Chart

Sometimes, a messy room can be overwhelming. If your kids aren’t sure where to start – and you aren’t either – try putting together an organization chart. The chart would lay out the order in which to start cleaning. Consider getting the trash gathered first, using bins to separate clothes from toys, etc.

Separate each task out and add stickers to the chart when something is completed. Consider rewards for consistently clean spaces and/or number of stickers for tasks completed. Small rewards, like a trip to the park or a vacation near home, can help keep older ones motivated.

Install Additional Rods in the Closet

Closets aren’t really made for kids, are they? Think about how tall they are, and where the rod for hanging clothes usually sits. Instead of having them teeter their way up a stepstool, install a second rod into the lower half of the closet.

This will allow them to hang up clothes themselves, using the lower bar for items that are worn all the time. The upper portion of the closet can be used for items that maybe don’t see the sun as much.

Hang up Artwork on Clipboards

Clipboards hanging on the walls are excellent for showcasing pictures, drawings, awards, etc. The papers and portraits are secure for as long as they are to be displayed, and the clipboards provide an interchangeable frame for the times when new artwork walks through the door.

Use Binders for the Rest

Not every piece of artwork that your son or daughter is proud of can hang on the wall. Instead of pitching out valuable pieces, store their proud moments in a binder labelled for each school year. Use archival sleeves and pockets to keep out pests and unwanted moisture.

Messy rooms are no fun. Clear the clutter away and get a deep cleaning going in your kids’ rooms this spring, using these cleaning hacks and organizational tips as inspiration. Be sure to get their help and input into the space, allowing older ones to take more responsibility for tasks as they are able. When it’s all done, enjoy a bedtime routine that is truly pain-free.
