Hot Tea for Everything! + HM #217

There is nothing better than hot tea to make you feel cozy and wonderful. Whether the weather is cold and wet or not, tea is definitely a comfort. I love the memories a nice cuppa tea renders of lovely moments shared with my mother and grandmother, of the tea parties with my daughter and nieces, or even just some quiet “me” time cuddled up by the fire with a good book. Hot tea or tea in general also has many health and beauty benefits. The gals of Home Matters are sharing all sorts of fun things — all related to tea in celebration of National Hot Tea Month. Christmas Song Chalkboards – Printable Decor or Gifts

Make your holiday season merry and bright with these fun and beautiful Christmas Song Chalkboards. Free Printables are easy for decor and gift ideas.

Christmas Song Chalkboards

Printable Decor or Gifts

Music holds a very dear place in my heart, in fact, music makes my heart sing. Luke and I met because I wanted to sing karaoke. And singing was the start of a beautiful relationship.

Once Thanksgiving dinner is over, the Christmas music is playing! And, it doesn’t stop until after New Year. I love to hear it, feel it, sing it, and live it. I’ll even share a little secret, I have been humming and singing Christmas songs for the past few weeks as I worked on these adorable Christmas Song Chalkboards. My daughter caught me a couple of times — chagrin and eye rolling.

Anyway, I have had a marvelous time putting these Christmas printables together for you, and I hope that you will love them as much as I do. They come in several different sizes including a printable sheet of all six designs for making ornaments or gift tags.

Check out my Christmas Song Chalkboard Ornaments DIY tutorial HERE.

School Year Tips To Shine With Success

This post, School Year Tips To Shine With Success, has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #MomentsShineWithWindex #CollectiveBias

Shine with success this school year with great tips: first day of school photo ideas, organization charts, homework station ideas, and free printables.

School Year Tips To Shine With Success

Make Moments Sparkle

Can you believe it? Back-to-school is here! This is always a special and hectic time for families with school-age kids, even when they are heading off to college (Ha! Maybe more so). But, through the years I have learned a thing or two, and now I am going to share them with you.

These ideas for a successful school year are easy to implement and change up to meet your needs. Be creative! I even created a few FREE PRINTABLES that you can download. My hope is that you will find these ideas helpful and fun.

First Day of School Photo Ideas:

The first day of school means PICTURES! So, be prepared, grab your Windex® Original Glass Cleaner and make moments shine. You definitely don’t want grubby fingerprints on windows in the background.

Give these creative and easy ideas a try.

  • Use Chalk Markers to write and draw on glass or chalkboard.

I did this with Rory this year — college bound. We have pictures from every school year of the kids in front of our car or truck. It is a nice way to look back and remember what life was like at that moment in time, including our ride.

A couple of really nice things about using chalk markers on the windows — they are easy to write with and very easy to clean with Windex® products, check it out…

Clean your windows first. Windex® Original Glass Wipes work great for this.

Draw and Write on your windows to make your moments shine. Then, it is easy to clean up with the Windex® Original Glass Cleaner spray. The spray helps loosen up the dried chalk. Watch how easy…

  • Use Sidewalk Chalk and draw a large number for the grade your child is entering on the driveway. Decorate the number with style and personal flair. Then, have your child sit in the number or next to it for the photo.
  • Make a small pennant banner that your child can hold for the picture. Write or glue the words: First Day of School, 1st Grade, 2017, or whatever you want to say to create a special memory.
  • Frame a printable and have your child hold it for the picture. You can download and personalize the FREE PRINTABLE I created just for you.

Click to Download the First Day of School Printable

Remember, be camera-ready with Windex® Original Glass Cleaner or Windex® Original Glass Wipes.

Then, take advantage of this fabulous OFFER: Buy 2 Windex® products and get $20 to shop at Shutterfly®. This is a limited time offer. Disclaimer: Offer valid 7/15/17 – 12/1/17. Visit here for terms and conditions. Notice those dates, you can buy more Windex® products and use the offer for Halloween and Thanksgiving photos too!

Get Organized for the New School Year:

Start the school year with a plan. Children do very well with a schedule, it gives them a sense of purpose and a semblance of security. If they know what to expect next, you will have an easier time getting them to accomplish it. Schedules help set your child up for success!

  • Set Schedules
  • Morning: Wake up time, eat breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, leave for school, etc.
  • After School: Have a snack, do homework, play outside, eat dinner, quiet reading time or studying, take a bath, pack your backpack for the next day, set out your shoes and clothes for school, etc.
  • Bed Time: Have a set time your child is supposed to go to bed. Making sure your child gets enough sleep each night and is well-rested will help to ensure they have a good learning day a school.
  • Have a specified place for backpacks and other items to be placed. If you are not searching all over the house for things your morning will go much smoother. Less stress, less fighting, and arguing is better for everyone’s day.

I have created a couple Organization Charts that will help your child stay on task between getting home from school and going to bed. You can download these FREE PRINTABLES. You have a choice of two different color schemes.

Click to Download I’m Ready For School Organization Chart – yellow

Click to Download I’m Ready For School Organization Chart – pink

Put this chart on your refrigerator and use magnets to mark the accomplishments daily.

Homework Station Ideas:

Homework stations were a big part of a successful school year for us. We had one set up in our kitchen, where the kids could sit at the table to do their work, and I could be getting dinner ready for the family. The nice thing was that I was there and available for any questions that may arise. We had a cabinet where all of our homework necessities were stored.

We also had homework supplies in the car/truck. Why not take advantage of the time while one child is sitting around waiting for the other sibling for sports practice or ballet lessons? The more you get finished early, the more free time you have at home at night as a family.

  • Set up a place in your home where your child(ren) will do homework every day.
  • Find somewhere to store all our homework supplies: notebook paper; graph paper; pencils; erasers; glue; paper clips; stapler and staples, colored pencils; crayons; markers; etc. Be sure supplies are easily accessible to your child.
  • Use a Lazy Susan or turntable to place your supplies on the table. That way your kids can just spin the supplies to reach what they need.

Supplies on the go.

  • Keep a smaller amount of the same school supplies in your vehicle. Colored pencils work better than crayons and markers as they do not melt.
  • Have chairs for your kids, so they have a place to sit.
  • A lap desk or board helps to give stability for writing.

Whatever you are doing, however you celebrate and organize for the new school year, remember to get things clean and make your moments sparkle with Windex® products, America’s #1 glass cleaner — famous for streak-free shine!* For more information and ideas for use follow Windex® on Facebook and Twitter.

And do make use of the Shutterfly® offer, generations of your family will thank you.

Want another fun idea for school? Check out this fun video tutorial, Cool For School or Anytime… Shoelacing!

Here’s to a happy and organized school year! Go get ’em kids and parents alike.

Good Day Sunshine

Free Printables and Gift Tags

When my kids were little, we used to do lots of singing in the car. One of our favorite songs was Good Day Sunshine. When summer comes along, I always think of this song with fond memories. I love summer. Gorgeous skies, great weather, ocean breezes, it all makes me happy, and I like to share that feeling with my family and friends.

Have a listen…

So, I thought I would create something special for you to celebrate the warm, happy feeling of summer inspired by that old carefree song. These printables come in two sizes — 4 x 6 inch and 5 x 7 inch — and are perfect for framing as home decor. I also designed some gift tags, which make it easy to share with family and friends. Add the gift tag to a bunch of flowers, a mason jar of goodies, baked goods, gift cards, or more.

This display looks gorgeous on our Mantel Makeover! We are thoroughly enjoying the summer sunshine in our living room.

Magical Reindeer Food + Free Printable

There is just something magical about Christmas. Some of my favorite memories revolve around this holiday season and the love, joy, and excitement on the faces of my children. I am sharing one simple yet special Christmas tradition that your kids will love — Magical Reindeer Food.

Magical Reindeer Food

A Christmas Tradition Your Kids Will Love!

Christmas Eve is full of fun and excitement. Children laughing and playing, making sure their stocking are hung with care, and of course waiting with great anticipation the arrival of Santa Claus.

Why not give your kids something a little magical to occupy a moment of time before they go off to dream of sugarplums in their wee little beds. This simple project is easy to prepare and uses things you may already have in your home. Plus, I have a really cute printable for you to download.

How To Make Magical Reindeer Food

What You Need:

  • Dry Oatmeal
  • Glitter
  • Mylar Confetti (something sparkly)
  • Plastic Bag with a zipper closure – snack or sandwich size
  • Free Printable Bag  Topper (see below)
  • Stapler

Directions:

  1. Print the Bag Toppers and cut them out.
  2. Mix Oatmeal , Glitter, and Confetti in a bowl.
  3. Place handfuls of the mixture into the plastic bags.
  4. Fold Bag Topper over the top of the closed bag and staple it in place.

Here is What You Do with the Magical Reindeer Food

On Christmas Eve, take you children out into the yard. Search the sky looking for Santa and his reindeer. Then, have them sprinkle the magical reindeer food on the ground. The glitter and confetti will sparkle in the moonlight. The shimmering light will lead the reindeer to your home.

This sweet little poem is on the printable bag topper:

Sprinkle on the lawn Christmas Eve night,
the moon will make it sparkle bright.
As Santa’s reindeer fly and roam,
magic feed leads them to your home.

DIY Car Care & Basic Road Trip Kit

Keeping You Rolling Down the Road

Car care is something we should always be mindful of, but with summer on the horizon that means busy schedules and road trips. You don’t want to find yourself stranded on the road waiting for a tow truck. Don’t fret, I have put together a DIY Preventative Maintenance Car Care and Basic Road Trip Kit Checklist that will keep you rolling down the road to your favorite destinations.

One of the most important things to know is, where to find information pertaining to your specific car or truck. The Owner’s Manual for your vehicle should be your first resource. If you do not have a manual, download it online from the vehicle manufacturer’s website, or order one on eBay.

Carry your Vehicle Owner’s Manual AND any Maintenance Records or Warranty Paperwork in your vehicle! These do you absolutely no good sitting at home when you are having a problem on the road.

HINT: Keep your records and paperwork in a folder. Cut the important information off filter boxes or other packaging, and tape them to the folder so you always know the Part Numbers for replacement. I keep my folder under the floor mat in the back of my truck.

Check Your Owner’s Manual For:

  • What Types of Fluids (type, weight, and volume) to use.
  • Explanation of Filler Cap Symbols.
  • What Types of Filters (type and size) to use.
  • The Maintenance Schedule – how often, mileage, or time.

Car Care – Preventative Maintenance:

Cursory Visual Check

  • Check for Drips or Fluid Leaks on the ground, under the vehicle and the hood.
  • Check that Windshield Wipers are in good condition – no splits, cracks, or tears.
  • Check that all Exterior Lights are in working order.
  • Check that all Interior Lights are in working order.

Fluids

  • DO NOT open a Hot Radiator!
  • Wear Gloves – Oils / Fluids can be hot.
  • Check / Change / Fill
    • Brake Fluid
    • Coolant
    • Engine Oil
    • Power Steering Fluid
    • Transmission Fluid
    • Windshield Wiper Fluid
    • Always start a road trip with fresh new fluids.

Filters

  • Oil Filter
  • Engine Air Filter
  • Cabin Air Filter
  • Replace according to the manual specifications, or more often for dusty or severe usage.

Drive Belt (Fan Belt)

  • Check for Cracks or Fraying.
  • If damaged, have the belt replaced.

Tires / Wheels

  • Check the Air Pressure in each Tire – Don’t forget the AIR in the SPARE!
  • Check the Tire Tread on ALL tires. (Use a penny, place it in the tread with Lincoln’s head going downward. If the tread doesn’t reach to Lincoln’s head, the tire is worn out).
  • Check for any Damage (nails, bulges, etc.), in all tires including spare.
  • Check your Lug Nuts — be sure they are tight, but not overly torqued or rusted / corroded in place to where you cannot get them off.
  • Check that your Spare Tire Fits your car, especially if you bought the car used, or modified it in any way.
  • Make sure your Lug Wrench fits the size of your lug nuts (in case you have aftermarket rims on your vehicle).
  • Check that the jack is complete and in working order.

Lights

  • If you are hauling a trailer, make sure the trailer lights are hooked-up and working properly.
  • Be sure to check Headlamp Aim / Angle, especially if you are hauling a trailer. You may need to adjust the aim so you don’t blind other drivers.

Battery

  • Clean off any corrosion using a little baking soda and water and scrubbing with an old toothbrush. ( Be sure to wear old clothes, gloves, and eye protection. DO NOT get any battery acid or cleaner on you).
  • Make sure your battery cables are well connected.
  • If your battery is over 3-years-old, have a Load Test done on the battery to check the condition before heading out on your road trip. A lot of chain auto stores nationwide will do these test for free. No sense getting stranded.

Here’s an example of easy Car Care that you can DIY:

Change your own FRAM Engine Air Filter

Changing your air filter is car maintenance so easy you will kick yourself if you’ve ever paid to have it done. It only takes one tool — a screwdriver that fits the screws on your Air Filter Box! Some vehicles may use clips instead of screws, a flat blade screwdriver will help pop these open. Plus, it only takes 5 minutes or less.

  1. Check the Owner’s Manual for the location of your Air Filter Box / Air Filter
  2. Be sure you have the correct size filter.
  3. Unscrew the lid on the air filter box, and remove lid.
  4. Remove old dirty air filter.
  5. Place new FRAM Extra Guard Engine Air Filter in the air filter box.
  6. Replace air filter box lid, and tighten screws.

You’re done! How simple is that? Don’t forget to recycle your old air filter. FRAM recommends changing your engine air filter annually or every 12,000 miles, but be sure to follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner’s manual.

Clean engine air filters are important for your car or truck. Think of it as the first line of defense for improving air flow and preventing dust and dirt from entering your engine and causing damage. They can also increase acceleration, horsepower, and improve overall engine performance. An easy win in my book!

You can find FRAM Air Filters at Walmart (in stores or online). The Walmart website has a search function to find the proper FRAM air filter for your vehicle — just a few simple questions.

I found it super easy to choose my FRAM Extra Guard Air Filter, order it right there online, and then pick it up at my local store, when I went in for a regular shopping trip.

Basic Road Trip Kit:

Now that you have done your car care, there is another important thing to prepare for the road trip — a Basic Road Trip Kit. It’s better to be prepared than to waste your vacation away on the side of the road, or some place waiting for your transportation to be towed or fixed. I’ve created a FREE Printable Checklist for you to download. It will walk you through putting together your handy-dandy Basic Road Trip Kit.

A Few Other Helpful Hints:

  • Carry a Map in case your GPS goes out.
  • Have a Cell Phone Charger for your vehicle.
  • Be sure the Charging Port in your car has Power to it.
  • Have a Hide-A-Key, or have someone else in the traveling party carry an extra set of keys.
  • Insist on FRAM Air, Oil, Transmission, and Fuel Filters when servicing your car, truck, or boat. FRAM a name you can trust.

Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem

Easter is a joyous celebration for Christians around the world, and in this happy remembrance I wanted to share a special little treat with you today, the Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem.

Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem

An Easy DIY Sweet Treat

This  DIY project is perfect for handing out a special little Easter treat. Think, school treats, party favors, and more, plus it is super easy. You just need to gather a few things and devote a minimal amount of time.

Here’s what you need:

  • Container (bag, box, or jar)
  • Jelly Beans
  • Printable Poem
  • Paper and / or Cardstock
  • Glue Stick
  • Ribbon or Stapler

This is how you put them together:

You can use bags, jars, or even cute boxes for these treats.

Cutting and Trimming the Paper and Cardstock:

  • Print off your Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem printable
  • Cut out the poem (I used decorative scissors).
  • Using a paper cutter, cut the cardstock in half vertically.
  • Take each vertical piece, and cut in half horizontially. (This will be the size you use for bags).
  • If making tags for jars or boxes, you can cut each piece in half again.

For Bags:

  • Trim cardstock with decorative scissors (if desired). Make sure the cardstock is longer than the poem so you have room to fold it to fit over the bag.
  • Glue the poem to the cardstock (again, leaving blank space at the top of the cardstock).
  • Fill bag with jelly beans (be sure all colors mentioned in the poem are present).
  • Fold the top of the cardstock to fit over bag.
  • Staple  cardstock to the bag.

For Jars or Boxes:

  • Trim the cardstock with decorative scissors (if desired).
  • Glue the poem to the cardstock.
  • Punch a hole in the corner of the tag.
  • Run ribbons through the hole.
  • Fill the jar or box with jelly beans (be sure all colors mentioned in the poem are present).
  • Tie the tag to the box or jar.
