Create A Gumdrop Topiary – A Sweet DIY

This adorable gumdrop topiary DIY is great for home decor and parties, as well as being a fun craft for kids highlighting math skills and textures.

Create A Gumdrop Topiary

A Sweet DIY

Who knew math could be so fun? Your preschooler or kindergartener will delight in this counting activity that results in a beautiful holiday decoration for the whole family to enjoy. Your child can count out loud as he adds each gumdrop to the topiary, and as he sees how high he can go, he will be practicing important math skills! This activity will also help your child practice color recognition and learn about different materials and textures.

Beauty and the Beast – Lumiere_and_Cogsworth_Topiary – Disney Wiki – Wikia

Topiary is the art of trimming and shaping trees into sculptural, ornamental shapes. Disneyland boasts some of the most famous American Portable style topiaries. In the early 1960’s Walt Disney used the theme park’s landscape shrubbery to recreate his beloved cartoon characters. They continue to be a highlight today!

What You Need:

  • Large Styrofoam ball (this will be the “canopy” of your topiary)
  • Wooden dowel, up to 1” thick and approximately 15” long
  • Green spray paint
  • Flower pot or vase
  • Moss, faux grass, or shredded paper
  • Floral foam (available at your local arts and crafts store)
  • Toothpicks, broken in half
  • Gumdrops in many different colors
  • Ribbon (optional)

What You Do:

  1. Spray the dowel green with the spray paint and let it dry completely overnight.
  2. Cut a block of floral foam to fit inside the flower pot or vase and place it inside.
  3. Help your child insert the dowel into the center of the Styrofoam ball about 3” deep.
  4. Help your child insert the other end of the dowel into the floral foam all the way down so that it touches the bottom of the vase. Make sure the dowel is stable.
  5. Have your child sort the gumdrops by color.
  6. Have your child stick a gumdrop onto one end of the toothpick and push the other end of the toothpick into the Styrofoam ball. Working in rows, continue placing gumdrops all the way around the ball.
  7. As your child works, ask him to count each gumdrop out loud. Occasionally ask how many of each color he has used or has left.
  8. Once the Styrofoam ball is completely covered, assist your child in placing moss, faux grass, or shredded paper into the vase to cover the floral foam.
  9. Tie a bow around the dowel with the ribbon (optional).
  10. Now stand back and enjoy your new Candyland-inspired table topper!

Isn’t this a fabulously fun and festive DIY project? What a bonus that it provides practice with math skills, dexterity, and textures for your little ones too. This would even make a cute Mother’s Day present!

Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem

Easter is a joyous celebration for Christians around the world, and in this happy remembrance I wanted to share a special little treat with you today, the Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem.

Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem

An Easy DIY Sweet Treat

This  DIY project is perfect for handing out a special little Easter treat. Think, school treats, party favors, and more, plus it is super easy. You just need to gather a few things and devote a minimal amount of time.

Here’s what you need:

  • Container (bag, box, or jar)
  • Jelly Beans
  • Printable Poem
  • Paper and / or Cardstock
  • Glue Stick
  • Ribbon or Stapler

This is how you put them together:

You can use bags, jars, or even cute boxes for these treats.

Cutting and Trimming the Paper and Cardstock:

  • Print off your Easter Jelly Bean Prayer Poem printable
  • Cut out the poem (I used decorative scissors).
  • Using a paper cutter, cut the cardstock in half vertically.
  • Take each vertical piece, and cut in half horizontially. (This will be the size you use for bags).
  • If making tags for jars or boxes, you can cut each piece in half again.

For Bags:

  • Trim cardstock with decorative scissors (if desired). Make sure the cardstock is longer than the poem so you have room to fold it to fit over the bag.
  • Glue the poem to the cardstock (again, leaving blank space at the top of the cardstock).
  • Fill bag with jelly beans (be sure all colors mentioned in the poem are present).
  • Fold the top of the cardstock to fit over bag.
  • Staple  cardstock to the bag.

For Jars or Boxes:

  • Trim the cardstock with decorative scissors (if desired).
  • Glue the poem to the cardstock.
  • Punch a hole in the corner of the tag.
  • Run ribbons through the hole.
  • Fill the jar or box with jelly beans (be sure all colors mentioned in the poem are present).
  • Tie the tag to the box or jar.

Easter Mantle Decor 2015

Easter Mantle 2015

My life during the past two weeks has been turned upside down, literally. Rory and I are having to move out of our home. A home in which, I grew up, and have lived raising my children for the past almost 23 years.

So, yesterday, when I was moving boxes of holiday decorations, I came across some of my Easter things. It was just what I needed. The happy Springy decorations put a smile on my face, and reminded me of the many blessings that we do have. Luke was gracious enough to let me festoon his mantle…

Those are real roses from the yard. I love how they grew with a curve… perfect for my mantle display. I know I’ll have to change these out, but I love the way they look right now.

I just love vintage Victoriana!

These little egg-shaped boxes with their vintage images are fun to decorate with.

Some cute little Easter train pieces…

Beaded and Glittered Easter Eggs…

This lovely Easter Wreath was a clearance sale find at Armstrong Nursery last year just before Easter. Rory and I couldn’t resist the $12 price tag! It is what I have always been on the look-out for–beautiful pastel colors, glittery shine, and simple. I think it’s gorgeous.

Every time I see this mantle it lifts my spirits, and a little stress flies from my shoulders. I hope you have enjoyed my Easter Mantle 2015 too.

How do you decorate for Easter?

Sidewalk Chalk Tutorial

Sidewalk Chalk Tutorial

An Easter Tradition

It has been a long-standing tradition at our house for the Easter Bunny to leave a chalk drawing in the driveway. The kids would find this surprise first thing Easter morning, as we left for church. That silly bunny always manages to hop through the drawing leaving his colored footprints behind, as he hops up to the house and away again.

I hadn’t done a drawing in years; but last year, Luke’s two grandnieces where coming for Easter dinner. That meant our tradition had to be resurrected–and this time I was recruiting some help. So, after everything was ready inside the house, Rory and I put on our figurative bunny ears and hopped on out to the driveway–armed and dangerous with sidewalk chalk.

Here are the Steps to Creating Your Own Chalk Art:

  1. Decide on your Design.
I found my inspiration for the drawing online…

  1. Draw the basic Outline for your Design.
You can see that I used white chalk to draw my outline. You can use a different color, but be sure that you will be able to blend it into your design. Try to keep the outline as light as possible.

  1. Draw in the Details for the specific area in which you are working.

  1. Color in the Design.
Use lighter and darker colors to create shadows and depth to your drawing. Mix colors to make new colors.

  1. Take your Chalk work from Drawing to Art.
This step will transform your drawing into a work of art! It will also give it some real lasting power. Use water and paint brush to wet down the chalk. Paint over the chalk, filling in any missing areas created from the rough canvas. Be careful NOT to mix your colors, unless you intend to do so. This will create a painted type of artwork versus the rough and grainy look of a regular sidewalk chalk drawing. As you paint over the chalk with water, your colors will darken and change, do not worry, they will dry and be beautiful.

Notice how vibrant and solid the colors of the painted bunny look.

Here are Some Additional Tips:

  1. Wear Disposable Gloves while you work. This will keep your hands cleaner, and not dry out your skin. They also change easily when they get dirty.
  1. A Kneeling Pad is your best friend!
  1. Have a Towel or Rag for leaning your hand on. This will help keep you from getting “road rash” from leaning heavily on the concrete.
  1. Paper Towels will come in handy.
  1. Use different cups of water for differing colors, so you don’t muddy the colors of your creation.

A couple of sample photos will show you the different types of sidewalk chalk art.. Be sure to notice the color layering for depth and interest, as well as the rough and smooth textures. One sample is a regular chalk drawing, while the other has been water painted.

I hope you have enjoyed this little tutorial. Now, go have some fun creating Sidewalk Chalk Art.
